HISTORY OF M&T BANK
M&T’s history dates back to 1856 when it was established as the Manufacturers and Traders Trust Company. This was in Western New York. This bank was established to finance durable manufacturing equipment.
Pascall Pratt (a foundry and forge proprietor) and Bronson Rumsey (who was involved in the leather industry) came up with the idea for the bank.
The initial capital of the bank, $200,000, had grown to $1 million by 1902. It became a national bank in March 1902. The bank also made its first acquisition that year. This was the acquisition of Merchants Bank of Buffalo.
The bank would grow over the years. Its reputation was such that it survived the 1929 stock market crash, which saw other banks liquidated.
M&T Bank has been involved in many acquisitions. The bank acquired 20 companies between 1987 and 2009.
